During a press conference held at the Government Media and Information Center, officials from the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development presented their annual performance report.
According to the ministry’s representatives, over the past year, 266 water supply projects were implemented across 251 villages in 149 districts within 34 provinces, with a total investment of 1 billion AFN. As a result, 1,525,400 residents have gained access to safe drinking water.
Officials further reported that 149 additional water supply projects are currently underway. Upon completion, these projects will provide clean drinking water to an additional 664,916 individuals.
Moreover, during the past year, 100 check dams and small water reservoirs, with a combined investment of 426 million AFN, were completed and commissioned in the provinces of Badghis, Baghlan, Balkh, Parwan, Paktia, Zabul, Sar-e-Pul, Farah, Kapisa, Kunduz, Nuristan, Nimroz, and Herat.
Officials also noted the recent construction of hundreds of kilometers of rural roads across 51 districts in 23 provinces, with ongoing work on 388 kilometers of roads in various provinces. In addition, the construction of a 50-kilometer road in the Wakhan district of Badakhshan province, which will connect Afghanistan to China, is currently in progress.
The ministry indicated that feasibility studies for the Kaj Satar Dam project in Nimroz province and design work for a water dam in the Golestan district of Farah province are ongoing, with construction expected to commence shortly.
Officials highlighted that the Golestan Dam in Farah province will have a storage capacity of 140 million cubic meters of water and will irrigate approximately 14,000 hectares of agricultural land in the districts of Chakhansur, Ghory, Khashrud, and Delaram.
Similarly, a dam is being constructed in the Qadis district of Badghis province, with a total investment of 2.5 million US dollars. This project will irrigate 1,400 hectares of agricultural land and provide drinking water to local residents.
Furthermore, the construction of the Qala-e-Naw water supply network, valued at 335 million AFN, is 85% complete. Upon completion, this project will deliver direct access to clean drinking water for 65,000 residents.
According to the ministry, the construction of a 5-kilometer retaining wall in the Spin Boldak district of Kandahar province is 95% complete. This project, valued at 75 million AFN, is among the ministry’s significant initiatives and will safeguard hundreds of thousands of hectares of agricultural land from seasonal floods. #
