ANSA: So Far, 949 Standards and 6 Construction Codes Have Been Formulated

Today, on 22 July 2025, officials from the Afghanistan National Standards Authority (ANSA), during a press conference at the Government Media and Information Center (GMIC), presented the ANSA’s annual achievements and performances as part of IEA’s entity to report the annual achievements.
During the press conference, the officials of ANSA stated that the formulation of national standards has been conducted based on accepted international principles, in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). So far, the authority’s technical committee has formulated a total of 949 standards and 6 national construction codes, taking into account Afghanistan’s geographic, climatic, environmental, economic, and cultural conditions.
Based on the provided information, over the past year, 64 standards and 164 test methods have been approved by the High Standard Council. Additionally, 264 volumes of draft standards and test methods have been prepared, while 1,121 volumes of standards and 133 volumes of building codes have been distributed to government agencies and the private sector.
The officials added that ANSA has taken effective steps in the area of international cooperation, aiming to strengthen ties and exchange expertise with similar global institutions. These initiatives include drafting technical cooperation MoUs with the Republic of Uzbekistan and the National Standards Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran, active participation in Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries SMIIC annual summits, lifting the suspension of Afghanistan’s membership in ISO and expanding collaboration, as well as acquiring 120 technical standards related to construction, environment, food materials, and agricultural production from ISO and SMIIC
Furthermore, investigations were conducted into the activities of 40 productional and imported corporations in the center and provinces. A total of 83,785 shipments of construction materials at the country’s ports were monitored for quality, of which 51 shipments were found against the standards.
According to the officials, a total of 332 construction material samples, 184 textile material samples, and 168 electronic appliance samples were referred to the authority’s laboratories which the test results were shared with the relevant institutions.
Based on decree No. 998 of the esteemed Amirul Momineen (may Allah protect him), the procedure for allocating five jeribs of land for construction standardization facilities at the country’s ports is currently underway. Additionally, the protocols for transferring land to the ports in Khost, Farah, Nangarhar, Takhar, Herat, and Paktia have been signed. This process is ongoing for other ports as well.
In conclusion, the officials emphasized that the key priorities of the authority include finalizing the law of standardization and metrology, formulating six work regulations, developing relations with regional and international organizations, conducting scientific research and studies, and accelerating the national standardization formulation process.
