MoPH: Funding Has Been Approved to Establish Public Hospitals in 318 Districts

On 27 July 2025, officials from the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), during a press conference at the Government Media and Information Center (GMIC), presented the MoPH’s annual achievements and performances as part of IEA’s entity to report the annual achievements.

 

During the press conference, the officials of MoPH stated that over the past year, the Ministry has taken significant steps toward reforming the health system, approving legislative documents, expanding services, and developing healthcare infrastructure. The National Health Policy for the next five years has been formulated and approved. In addition, six legislative drafts, two procedures, 200 charters, 15 regulations, and 70 health guidelines have been prepared.

 

According to the officials, funding has been approved to build public hospitals across 318 districts, and the initial work has already started. Additionally, with financial help of the UN refugee agency, 20 more hospitals are also being launched. Among the 174 incomplete projects, 12 have been successfully completed, and 202 health facilities have been upgraded.

 

The officials further mentioned that a total of 6367 professional and support staff were recruited through a transparent and competitive process across various positions throughout the past year. In addition, a comprehensive database has been established to assess the training needs of approximately 33000 staff members, and 27470 personnel of the Ministry have received training across various sectors. To equip healthcare facilities, significant initiatives were undertaken including, the construction of hospitals and diagnostic centers, and development the delivery of medical services. A total of 388 small and large-scale contracts valued at 1.2 billion Afghanis have been executed. In addition, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, food supplies, and oil products worth 2.6 billion Afghanis have been procured for 22 national central hospitals.

 

Based on the information, over 71772 samples of medicine, food, and drinking water were examined. Of these, 928 were deemed substandard, and 4188 were rejected for various reasons. Additionally, 1077 tons of low-quality and expired medicines and food items were destroyed. Across the country, 3526 private healthcare facilities have been registered, with 382 of these institutions receiving operational licenses within the past year. Likewise, with the inauguration of new healthcare centers, employment opportunities have been created for approximately 47000 professional personnel and 25000 non-professional staff.

 

According to the officials, as a result of the Ministry’s sustained efforts, 263 million Afghanis assistance have been secured from international institutions and organizations over the past year. A total of 354 cooperation contracts have been finalized with governmental and NGOs, and six consignments of assistance, comprising medicine, medical equipment, ambulances, and vaccines have been received from several countries and international organizations.

 

In conclusion, the officials of MoPH stated that to strengthen international engagement and foster cooperation, officials from the Ministry conducted 40 official visits over the past year to countries including Japan, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Switzerland, Qatar, Iran, Pakistan, and Thailand.
