Decisive Action Against Land Grabbing: Land Restitution in Helmand

Land grabbing has remained a longstanding challenge in Afghanistan, leading to the violation of citizens’ rights and significant losses to public property. Consequently, the efforts of the Commission for the Prevention of Land Grabbing and the Restitution of Grabbed Land is considered crucial for upholding the rule of law, ensuring transparency, and protecting the rights of the people.

The latest achievement involves the identification, verification, and restitution of 18,238 acres of land in Nad Ali District, Helmand Province, which has now been restored to state ownership. This milestone not only demonstrates the successful recovery of illegally seized land but also reflects the government’s firm resolve, reinforced national responsibility, and commitment to transparent oversight. Careful verification, based on existing documentation and historical records, underscores the professional and systematic approach applied in enforcing the law.

The Commission’s technical team has achieved significant results in Helmand province. Over the past two years, a total of 153,386.96 Jeribs of land have been restituted, including 1,645.51 Jeribs in Lashkargah city, approximately 51,000 Jeribs in Babaji District, around 56,000 Jeribs in the Loy Manda area of Nad Ali District, 26,500 Jeribs in Marja District, and most recently 18,238 Jeribs in Nad Ali District.

The restituted land in Nad Ali District was precisely verified using existing records, reflecting transparency and meticulous oversight. Over the past three years, through the Commission’s tireless and continuous efforts, extensive evaluation, and rigorous follow-up, land previously seized illegally in various districts have been returned to the state. Collectively, more than four million Jeribs of land have been restored through legal procedures, transparent processes, and judicial evaluation.

This successful restitution demonstrates that, with strong political will and technical expertise, no obstacle can impede justice or the fulfillment of national responsibilities. The Nad Ali District experience confirms that safeguarding public property and protecting citizens’ rights is achievable only through the rule of law, transparent monitoring, and sustained, systematic efforts.
